The Petromax lamp was developed in 1910 based on an existing spirit-fueled incandescent lamp designed by Max Graetz. He chose the name in reference to "Petroleum Max."
At that time, electricity in the form of bright light was not available to everyone, and Max Graetz made it his life’s work to change that. He secured the rights to the name “Petromax” and turned the kerosene lamp, in various designs, into a global bestseller. The first Petromax was a hanging lamp, but the most famous model has been around since 1922 and was the best-selling model by far. In the 1960s, over 80% of the kerosene lamps manufactured in Germany by the "Petromax" company were exported abroad, primarily to countries where electricity was not yet commonplace. Thus, the Petromax became the standard lamp in households worldwide and on international markets. The lamp was very simple to operate, easy to repair, and very economical in its use of kerosene.
The 1970s marked a turning point when demand collapsed. To reduce production costs, manufacturing was then relocated to Portugal and subsequently to China. Graetz AG/Graetz KG ceased operations, and Schott AG became the trademark owner for Germany and Central Europe. A successful resurgence followed.
