The Petromax lamp was developed on the basis of an already known spirit lamp by Max Graetz in 1910. He chose the name in reference to "Petroleum Max".
Electricity in the form of bright light was not available to everyone at the time, but Max Graetz made it his life's work to change this. He secured the rights to the name "Petromax" and made the petroleum lamp, in various designs, a worldwide bestseller. The first Petromax was a hanging lamp, but the best-known version has been around since 1922 and was the best-seller par excellence. In the 1960s, more than 80% of the petroleum lamps made in Germany by the "Petromax" company were exported abroad, especially to countries where electricity was not the order of the day. Thus the Petromax became the standard lamp in households all over the world and in cross-border markets. The lamp was very simple to operate, easy to repair and very economical in petroleum consumption.
The 1970s saw a turning point when demand collapsed. Production was then moved to Portugal and then to China to reduce production costs. Graetz AG/Graetz KG ceased to exist and Schott AG then became the brand rights holder for Germany and Central Europe. A successful upswing was born.
Even today, Petromax products are in great demand and are characterised by uniqueness. The traditional petroleum lamp (Petromax HK 500) is a sought-after product in the outdoor sector thanks to its bright glow and distinctive appearance. The strong light lamp turns night into day and beautifies the sight with its self-sufficient light source without electricity.
The German manufacturer impresses with highest quality, paired with innovation and a unique history.
In the last decades, the Petromax range has expanded so much that they are now one of the largest manufacturers in the categories of barbecue & outdoor cooking as well as bushcraft & survival. The popularity of the Petromax fire pot, also called Dutch Oven, is particularly noteworthy. Made of cast iron, the fire pot offers countless possibilities for delicious and flavourful recipes. However, the same material is also used for the popular pans, which are also among the most popular in the outdoor sector. The practical storm lanterns by Petromax also convince with first-class quality.
Petromax attaches great importance to outdoor cooking and has therefore written its own cookbook for outdoor use, which complements the foldable Atago Grill by Petromax.
